Misbehaving geriatrics is becoming a popular staple of Hollywood comedies with Red 2 grossing more than $100 million worldwide. Last Vegas is a hilarious buddy movie that brings together a fantastic cast like we’ve never seen them before and adds a pinch of humour and Las Vegas glamour to growing old. 

Three sixty-something childhood friends take a break from their humdrum daily lives to reunite in a trip to Las Vegas, throwing a bachelor party for their last remaining single friend. 

There’s something inherently funny about older actors in comedic roles and nothing is funnier than hearing screen-legends such as Morgan Freeman joking about hemorrhoids. Last Vegas is arguably one of the funniest comedies to be released recently and while it is just as silly and brash as the premise suggests it’s a charming and laugh out loud funny film none the less. It’s refreshing to see older generations being represented in films such as this, God knows the ‘group of young friends go on a trip, take drugs and get drunk’ is a tired and boring cliche; however the only drugs being taken in Last Vegas are Lipitor and viagra. 

Within this silly bachelor party story and amid the laughs are some really touching character arcs, particularly that of De Niro’s Paddy, who is struggling with the loss of his wife. Despite the daft premise and the outlandish situations that the characters get themselves in to there is heart to the story. 

Last Vegas is a laugh out loud romp that’s brilliantly cast. The performances are outstanding and there is really nothing to dislike about it. It has everything you could possibly ask for in a comedy, but with Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas and Kevin Kline at the helm it exceeds expectations. One of the best comedies to hit cinemas in a while, Last Vegas shows The Hangover how it’s done; and hopefully won’t bombard us with loads of sequels.
